The ASUP NEC meeting is holding two days after the leadership of the union held a ‘fruitful’ meeting with the new Education Minister, Ibrahim Shekarau, who was sworn in by President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday.

The ASUP NEC which consists of all chapter (polytechnic) chairmen of the union and the national executive of the body.

One of member of the NEC, who  attended the meeting, disclosed to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday morning that the strike might be suspended after the meeting.

“The strike is likely to be suspended at the end of the NEC meeting today following the outcome of the last meeting we had with the new Minster of Education,” the source said.

PREMIUM TIMES, however, learnt that some members of the NEC have voiced reservations on trusting the new minister without a concretely signed agreement, particularly on the salary arrears being owed the teachers, and may raise such concern during the meeting.

Should such members win the majority of the NEC over, then the strike may continue, the source said
